In 2006, Katie, then 18, completed her first solo challenge, a
single-handed circumnavigation of the United Kingdom in
a 21ft Corribee, and raised over £10,000 for the Ellen
MacArthur Trust.
It was a momentous achievement, and was recognised by
the sailing world when Katie was awarded the prestigious
YJA Raymarine Young Sailor of the Year Award 2006 at
the London Boat Show, in recognition of her determination,
courage and seamanship.
- £10,000 raised for charity
- 2000 miles
- 60 ports
- 3 months
- 1 life changing experience
The next challenge that Katie has set herself is to compete in the 2009 OSTAR single-handed
transatlantic race.
Made famous by the likes of Sir Francis Chichester and legendary French sailor Eric Tabarly, the
OSTAR is run every 4 years. The race starts in Plymouth on May 25th 2009 with up to 50 boats
heading 3000 miles across the North Atlantic to Newport, Rhode Island. Depending on the
weather, Katie will arrive in the US in around 20 days.
Modern communications technology will allow the press and public to watch the race as it
unfolds, guaranteeing media coverage in the specialist sailing and national
press.
The boats will be at the race village in Plymouth
for the week leading up to the start, giving ample
media & corporate opportunities to sponsors.
Katie is currently the youngest and only female
competitor confirmed for the 2009 OSTAR.
Endorsement:

Sustainability and the Environment
Sailing has, for centuries, harnessed the power of the wind to enable mankind to discover new
continents, establish international trade routes and in more recent years to sail for pleasure and
sport. This provides a synergy with the current trend towards renewable energy sources.
Sailing is unique in pitting man and machine together against the elements and over vast
distances without using an energy source that damages the environment.
Katie's commitment to the environment is :
The boat will be delivered to and from race events by
sailing, thereby minimising our environmental impact.
Any unavoidable activities, such as travel,
the use of a support boat etc will be offset
using a reputable agency.
It is our intention that this project is
carbon neutral throughout the next 2 years.
